NTL Home problems

Hi,

I have installed my cable modem (NTL:home 100 - Actually Ambit USB/Ethernet modem) using Ethernet on my linux box and have used dhclient which ships with Redhat 8.0 to gain a DHCP lease.

My main problem is that when my ethernet card is being brought up during the boot it tells me that it could not bring up eth0 and determine it's ip address because the link may be missing....That's not the exact message I will get that if you need it but I know that the text of that message is given in the 'ifup' script. After booting I am then able to bring up eth0 and run dhclient which does give me a correct ip address and I can browse the net.....Not for long. Ususally when I start a reasonable size download e.g I was download the list of newsgroups from NTL the cable modem resets itself and when it has booted again has a different ip address itself rather than the usual 192.168.100.1. At this point if I reboot the modem myself it reverts back to what it should be.

On top of all this i get error messages about lo (loopback) I can't remember exactly what they are but it means that I am unable to ping 127.0.0.1

I am mainly worried about just bringing the modem up automatically without it rebooting........does anybody know how?
