nstat output

hello,
just wonder what is the following output means:
Code:
[root@toshiba ~]# netstat -tulpn
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:40526 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN -
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 707/rpcbind
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1030/sshd
<cut>
i can see on the other node outcoming connections to this (40526) port been dropped by firewall.
Code:
Nov 30 14:30:54 server OUTPUT DROP: IN= OUT=eth0 MAC= SRC=192.168.1.204 DST=192.168.1.101 LEN=60 TOS=00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=39392 CE DF PROTO=TCP SPT=665 DPT=40526 SEQ=1602751929 ACK=0 WINDOW=14600 SYN URGP=0
yet, there is nothing on the 665 port too (of the server ) :
Code:
[root@server ~]# netstat -tulpn | grep 665
[root@server ~]#

That means nothing is currently listening on port 665 because the connection that was initiated is closed by firewall.
The output of netstat is pretty descriptive.

So to have the connection working you have to tell your firewall to accept them and you have all the info in hand.

would you mind telling us what you are actually looking for ?

nothing specific. Was reviewing the FW logs and spotted these attempts to connect.

all right so i understand that 665 is been dropped, but what is listening on the 40526 then?

what happens when someone calls you and the call drops suddenly at the other end... you would keep asking "Hello .. Hello .. are you there ?".
