NSLU2, Samba and Low Transfer speeds

So, I bought this cool little device today and I've put the 3rd party firmware on it (uNSLUng 5.5). I have upgraded it to samba 3.0.21 through the ipkg repository supplied. Even before I did all this I was getting low transfer speeds around 2mb/s, with the original firmware and the new stuff. I suspected it wasn't the NSLU2, but possibly my Mandriva box. So I booted my XP laptop and voila, I'm getting about 6mb/s through it. SO I don't know where to start to diagnose this problem.

Thanks for any insight.
