nslookup shortname vice FQDN

I have a RHEL 5.10 virtual server with host name of metacity.
I am running a Windows 2008 R2 DC with static host entry as metacity, FQDN as metacity.ddd.local as 192.168.53.33

/etc/hosts 192.168.53.33 metacity metacity.ddd.local
/etc/resolve nameserver 192.168.53.55
nameserver 192.168.53.56

everytime I do a nslookup against the short name domain name: nslookup metacity : it fails with: ** server can't find metacity: SERVFAIL

nslookup against FQDN, nslookup metacity.ddd.local , works and I get my ip 192.16.53.33

any ideas why the shortname will not resolve???

Robert
