not being able to establish connection using 'eth0'!!!
 

Hi! everyone...i have been accessing internet from windows xp pro(i have an on-board lan card with VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter) and i use a software provided by the ISP to login to the net......i have the same for linux....but somehow am not able to access net(i dont know if theres a glitch with the eth0 interface).Even after setting the IP addresses in the network cofiguration wizard(i'm using fedora core 3 with KDE and Gnome Desktop environments)..it seems useless coz upon trying to ping the server.....i get "network unreachable" report!!:confused:

I'm new to linux and have heard about the level of security it provides in networking!!........
Any kinda help wud b gr8!!:)

You need to provide more information on what type of internet service you have. If it is a cable modem, then simply using DHCP will give the interface an IP address, set up the default gateway and nameserver addresses. For ISDN or aDSL or phone modem service there will be more to it.

well actually i dont know wats a DHCP.......but i do know one thing i'm connected to my ISP's server via a LAN(and 'they' told me its a broadband connection at 512 kbps!!) and that i had to give the Primary DNS information and Default gateway information to gain access to the net!!
i dont think i have an in-built modem(how to find out??)
plz help coz i badly need to get the 'net thing' going thru linux!

You still haven't stated what kind of internet service you have. However if they said that you need to set up the DNS and gateway information, then it sounds like you may have a static IP address assigned. If you are dual booting, then you can get the gateway and nameserver addresses when you are using Windows XP. ( Normally the ISP supplies this information ) You can type in the command "ipconfig /all" in the "command" shell. Displayed is the information IP, Subnet, DNS servers, WINS servers if any, and whether DHCP is used. As well as the default gateway address.

did u say that "ipconfig /all" will display all the info regarding default gateway...IP,subnet,DNS servers...but i know all of them, they(ISP) have told me about it...its just that i dont know where xactly to enter these informations....and get the whole thing goin for me!
shud i still do "ipconfig /all"??

one more thing......how come doing something so nominal is such a big deal in linux.......(i hope i'm not sounding too harsh!!) but its just that i'm so frustrated...:(

I have no idea what kind of internet service he has. He said that he connects directly into a LAN. Could be that the building has some sort of network distribution but I don't know what it beyond that. First he said that he needed the DNS and gateway information, then he said that they already gave him the information.

1)i have cable broadband service that is i have a optilink systems cable running all the way from a building
some blocks off(from thier local server) and it fits into my onboard LAN slot behind my CPU cabinet and i have an adapter====> Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
2)they have provided a software that i use to login into their account and i have configured it using a static IP address,subnet mask,default gateway!and even when i dont login i can ping the site and i get replies !!they have provided me with the software's linux version also and its just an executable that takes user id and password as arguments however results in "segmentation fault" when i try to run it!! AND i also cannot ping the site which i cud do in windows before any official login!
3)My Question is =====>a)how do i establish a proper connection using the "eth0" interface?(coz i cannot even ping the site which results in "connect:network not reachable")
i have tried the network configuration wizard on my distro but to no avail i still cant get a proper ping!
b)wat do i xactly do "with pppoe-setup"?cud u plz b a bit more elaborate ruudra!!:)

in your case pppoe-setup is not applicable. It would be if you had some ethernet modem on your node.

i don't have enough idea about the network configuration in FC3.
are you providing IP address, subnetmask, gateway in linux configuration too (while running the wizard )???

Are you saying that you don't have a cable modem? Cable modems need to be authenticated before you can access the internet, but the modem itself can be pinged. Take a look at the output of /sbin/ifconfig and /sbin/route. Comparing the two may indicate a difference. However if there is some sort of authentication that is needed to connect to the internet, then I don't know what that would be.

Also check the link light on your NIC card. If it isn't lit, there may be a problem with the cabling.

I just Googled for Optilink. The links were for fiber optical audio cable, so now I'm even more confused. Do you have fiber cable running into your home?

The documentation indicates that they use DHCP. Although it is possible that you have a different contract with a static IP address. Also they indicate that they run a fiber cable into the home, and run it into a box of some sort. Up to the box, the cable is ATM.
I think you need to get straight information on whether you have a box or not, and whether you are assigned a static IP on the internet, or if DHCP is used. If there is a box, is it a router that converts from ATM fiber to ethernet. If so, does the router have a web interface like a cable modem does.

Compare the output of the commands "/sbin/ifconfig" and "/sbin/route" with the IP information you provided. Is the link light lit on your NIC card. If not, you may have a networking cable problem.

I have the same problem. My IP is static too, im connected to LAN, LAN registered MAC addresses, i have all the information IP's GW's DNS's and other but still cant connect. I can ping only myself and if i try something other it just says that network unacesible. I'm searching for info about it almost 2 weeks and still no results.
