Non interactive FTP

I am trying to do a non-interactive FTP to a SCO server using the .netrc file for logon. I have checked the man pages for non-interactive ftp but it only describes auto-fetching which I don't want to do. I just want to ftp a file on the SCO server from an application that executes a shell command. With SCO this was acheived using there Rapid File Transfer Program rftp. I have googled for the answer and was hoping to find a GNU simular to rftp but in the current situation with SCO that might not be such a good idea. Does any have any suggestions or pointers

The answer depends on your ftp client. I'm using lftp and in that case it is pretty easy to code a script for example remote backup ... just take a look at the man page of your ftp client. man ftp if you are unsure!
