No wireless extensions with ath9k (ar9285)

Im running kernel 3.11.6 with an atheros 9285. Im using the ath9k driver. I know it partially works because i can do ifconfig wlp8s0 up and the led will turn on. But doing any iwlist or iwconfig tells me it has no wireless extensions or doesnt support scanning. Cfg80211 wireless extension compatibility is included in my kernel also. What can i do to fix this?

Im running gentoo by the way.

I use Gentoo, Atheros 9825 and the ath9k with the cfg80211 enabled. I use iw though. So to scan it's "iw dev <device interface in my case wlp3s0) scan" and then "iw dev wlp3s0 link" once I see my network is there. I have no problems or special setup. Did you forget to "ln -s net.lo net.wlp3s0" ? Of course change wlp3s0 to whatever your interface name is. Also is dhcpcd running?

Hmm thats really weird i did enable cfg80211 also. No i did not do that!! Ill try that in a minute and we'll see what happens. Since your using the same card on gentoo as me, can you check back once in a while to help me out? What kernel are you running?

What network client package are you using? Wicd, wpa_supplicant? Are you using a front end? What kind if security does your network have? I have wpa2 so I use wpa_supplicant. Chroot into your environment and emerge iw so you can run this commands. There's good documentation at www.gentoo.org like the handbook and the gentoo wikis have good docs too. But in the meantime start dhcpcd and if you didn't symllink net.lo that could very well be your problem. Everyone forgets to do that. If you have IRC I highly suggest going in the #gentoo channel in irc.freenode.net for help too. That's where I'm always at including the gentoo developers.
