No network/internet access with dhcp and cable modem

hello

I have mandrake 9.2 installed and I am having trouble with getting it to get one my network and the internet.

I have a cable modem attached to a computer that acts as a firewall. The firewall computer connects to the internet just fine and uses dhcp to give IP's to all the other computers on the network. I have a windoze computer connected to the network that connects to the internet just fine. My mandrake machine however refuses to connect. I have used DrakeConnect in the Mandrake Control Center to configure everything and that has not worked and I have manually edited the /etc/sysconfig/network and the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 files and that has also still not worked. I have also tried running dhclient, dhcpcd, and dhcxd frim the command line. they all pretty much tell me they are sending a dhcpdiscover but they get no dhcpoffer.

Using my windows machine I know that my gateway is 192.168.0.1 and my dns servers are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and the dhcp server is 192.168.0.1. I have all this information in my mandrake machine in all the right spots but it still won't connect to the network or internet.

My /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 looks like this:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes
NEEDHOSTNAME=no

When I type "ifconfig" I get:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:2c:06:6d:a4
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:586 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0. 0 b) TX bytes:0 (0. 0 b)

eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:2c:06:6d:a4
inet addr:127.255.255.255 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Interupt:18 Base address:0x2000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:342 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:342 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:26589 (25.9 kb) TX bytes:26589 (25.9 kb)

If someone could help me I would really appreciate it.

Hi,

I am not sure but please try following command :

dhcpcd -h hostname

If still problem not solved then write what error you get about ethernet card at booting time .

best luck

Here's something to try...

I would try to put a static ip setup on you Mandrake machine.. Here's how to do it:

Take your XP machine as an example:

in a command prompt type

ipconfig /all

note:
- ip adress
- gateway
- one DNS

get into you Mandrake as root

ifcong eth0:9 down
ifcongif eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 <ip adress of the XP machine +1(192.168.0.5+1=192.168.0.6)> up
route add default gw mango-gw <ip of the gateway your XP>
cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.bak
echo nameserver <YOUR XP DNS ip> > /etc/resolv.conf

That should give you the exact same set up as the XP box..
Plz post results so we can evaluate the rest of the problem.
