No internet without router?

A year ago I got a router for Tivo. I no longer have Tivo so I don't need the router, but when I take out the router and just use the cable modem I can't connect to the internet.

I've connected it and disconnected it, checked the wires, rebooted; it's always the same. I try ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 and it just verifies that I have no connection without the router.

I wouldn't even care except I'm trying to use Azureus for torrents and I can't connect to the net when I disable NAT (really cheap router).

The router is a generic wired 4 port, cable modem is comcast motorola and I'm running Debian Etch.

Have you powered EVERYTHING down, including the cable modem, and tried that. The cable modem won't recognize a new "client" otherwise.

Or, maybe the MAC of the router "registered" with your cable company, and you need to call then to tell them it's changed.

Cheers.

Yes! I did shutdown the modem once, but I didn't run ifdown etc. ('cause I didn't think the modem was the problem). But it worked, thank you! I haven't been that stumped in a couple of years.
