No Internet w/SuSE 9.0 Pro without...

rebooting 2-4 times...every time I boot my SuSE 9.0 system I have to reboot several times to gain access to the internet...I have disabled my firewall (the built-in version) and have checked and rechecked all the settings that I can think of and still no luck...same result...I am running BitDefender Console Antivirus, could this pose a problem? How can I check to see if something I've downloaded from SuSE Update has caused this problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...this has been going on for about a month or better...getting ready for the reinstall....please advise and thanks in advance.

Try
ifup eth0
as root, monitor
tail -f /var/log/messages

See if that works. Rebooting is a bit drastic. Seems like a race condition. I flip between dialup and DSL (work and play) all the time, I have a script that stops/starts eth0 with desktop icons. On startup, it does this...

rcSuSEfirewall2 stop
ifup eth0
rcSuSEfirewall2 start

When I want to stop eth0, I just
ifdown eth0

Use ifup and ifdown in Suse, not ifconfig.

I'm not sure I expressed my problem correctly...

I dont want to turn on OR off my internet (eth0 on...off...etc)...I have broadband and I 'want' it on all the time....when I open my browser most of the time I get blank page...I will have to reboot and reboot until my homepage shows up...clearly, there is a switch I've set or some script file that I have modified that would cause this sort of action...

howzit

is your ip static or dhcp from ISP if itīs the later is may be that the ip gets reset which then u may need to get a new ip this is normally set buy the dhcp server which sets the lease time. It may be easier to type cmd ifdown eth0 and ifup eth0 to restart service and get new ip. Remember that eth0 may not correspond with your adapter check network settings first using ifconfig -a.

OH Before restart NIC try checking with ifconfig -a if you have an ip then restart the card and check to see if the one you recived was the same as the day before.
