No internet in SuSE 9.0 Pro

Hi - I'm new to linux, I just bought SuSE 9.0 Pro and I've managed to install it on a machine also booting with other windows operating systems. I run windows xp pro and windows 98 se and have no problem accessing the internet through my dsl router. I have it connected using ethernet I know that it works ok, my router is set to dhcp server. I can't get the SuSE to work and I don't know why? I used to have RedHat9 instead and that worked fine, I set it to dhcp and it had no problems bringing up web pages, since I swapped I can't get it working. I've tried to configure using Yast but there's no internet. I can access the router setup via telnet from it so there is an ethernet connection to my router. I've tried looking through the manuals but haven't found anything to try, any suggestions would be appreciated as I don't know what to do anymore.

Hi there,

SuSe at last for me had from time to time the tendency, to NOT take the DHCP provided DNS servers, without them you won't find any pages out there. Try the following, log into your router, write down the dns servers IP, then set a static ip for your SuSe machine, with the router IP as gateway and the DNS server. (In Yast thats easy). If that doesn't help (it did for me) someone else may know whats the problem.

Before you try the above, try this:

(as root): ifconfig eth0 (assuming eth0 is connected to the router)

This will show you the IP address, and you'll be able to see if it is correct.
If there's no IP address, try:

(as root): ifup eth0

It will try to run the dchpcd client, and grab IP from the router. It will tell if it is ok.

Then, ifconfig again just to check.

Post again if it fails.

Thanx for your replies, firstly I don't know what the DNS IP is, neither do I understand what you mean? I've looked in the router setup but there is nothing to do with that.

Secondly I tried using the ipconfig eth0 command and there is an ip address for the machine. It's the correct IP which displays in the router setup and I've set it as a static route but still no web pages so I don't know what I should do. What you've said so far doesn't really help me with my problem, I don't know if I've got something missing in my version of SuSe but I had no problems connecting with Redhat and it was setup exactly the same?

to find the dns servers while using the connection under win98 go to start>run> and type winipcfg this will bring up a box with the dns server number in when u press (more) this will give u dns2
Add the dns servers to /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver (dns1)
nameserver (dns 2)

or if u r networking to another pc and your linux is a client
ur nameserver will be the ip addy of the other pc or ur router

Ok.. I'll give that a go and see what happens..

I'll see what that is and try to get it connecting, I wasn't really sure with me not having to change that file for Red, it just worked without doing anything apart from change it to dhcp
