No internet access in Suse 9.1 pro
 

First time user creating duel boot with Win XP and Suse 9.1 pro. I have a motorola SB5120 cable modem connected via USB. I just can't get it to work. Suse seems to recognize the modem fine. Having a bit of trouble finding where to put the right info. It seems there are so many places to look and then figuring out some of the terminology (as opposed to windoze). I know I need to plug in the following (as it is stated in windoze):

Connection Settings (proxy's)
Host Name
connection specific DNS suffix
Physical address
IP Address
subnet mask
default gateway
DHCP server
DNS server (I have two addresses for this one)

besides this is there something i'm missing?

Use the ethernet cables to connect to your computer. Not the usb. You have a surfboard modem, and piping tcp/ip over usb is a extra complication that you can remove before you consider configuration issues.

When I first got this modem I couldn't even get it working in Windoze connected to the ethernet card (I was upset though because the cable guy was here and played around on my computer for two hours while I was at work and trashed my setup. I had to undo what he did). That's why it's connected to USB. It setup easily that way in Windoze. I'm gonna have to wait till tomorrow to try it again though (I overslept this morning). Thank you.

I don't think any lin dist is better than knoppix, if you can't connect to the net after a few try, it's always because your modem needs to go to the guarantee shop. If the thing go fine in win, then your dist needs to be uninstalled. Don't ever try to guess , you lost time, use it to understand.

Your ISP will replace your modem if it's not working. Tell them it's not working, and ask for an ethernet one. Also, replace your NIC. That will solve all of the possible BS at once.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with my ethernet card. It worked fine on the previous modem which wasn't working very well. The current modem is the new one and has both USB and RJ-45 connections. I just didn't have the patience to figure out why it wouldn't work on the ethernet card after the cable guy messed up my configuration. Since it setup easily via USB I left it alone. If it is possible to get it working the way it is connected I wouldn't mind trying to do it since it would help me learn more about this OS anyway.

My goal is to eventually make the change to Linux on every computer I build for family and use for business. I see it will take time but I believe it to be worth it.

Finally ran the cat5 cable but then realized while trying to get the modem working through the ethernet card that there isn't a driver for the surfboard to work that way. There isn't one on the installation disk. I guess Comcast just gets a certain type of modem and decides how they're going to install it and that's it.

In Linux, after disconnecting the USB cable does not reveal the modem at all though the ethernet card appears to be configured. I attempted to utilize the "answers" located here. It seems to be a bit different in 9.1 Pro. I can't figure out what to put in "Domain Search 1" field. I put the DHCP server address in the "Name Server 1" field.

Problem solved!!!

There actually was a problem with the cable modem. The ethernet connector wasn't working though it worked fine via USB. Comcast came out and swapped it for free and had it up and running in no time in XP. I just went back to my directions I had printed from the user guide and webpage listed on page 98 of that guide. I went and undid everthing I had done including the ethernet card configuration. I then went back to the ethernet card and let DHCP configure it automatically. I then went to Sysconfig Editor->etc. I changed the option dhclient_modify_resolv_conf to "yes". I then rebooted. At present it doesn't seem as fast a connection as in XP but for now I'll take it. I am presently downloading updates and patches so it does work.
