I received the same error with the 3Com network cards 3Cxxx and 5Cxxx (combos or not)! Unfortunately after i changed those network cards everything worked OK...
As long as i know you have a way to configure them before using (a 3Com software), check out their parameters, and see if PnP is enabled on the card and better if set to DHCP or BOOTP compliance...

for all who care...figured it all out...

one night when my internet connection was sketchy, i used YaST in my SuSE 9.1 to change my network card model to see if i had the right one selected. after it didn't work again after that, i tried to change it back more than once to see if it had worked. what that did was during boot, my computer was trying to initiate 5 network cards. one for every time i thought i was "switching" my model with YaST. all i did was click the "advanced" button and manually delete eth1-eth4 and left only eth0. works like a charm. note: this message for severely impared noobs like myself ;-)
