NMAP 5X OSTYPE Detection

We use NMAP 5X at my job and noticed the when NMAP attempts to detect different OS types it is really hit or miss. I used Xprobe2 and it hits it on the pinhead. My question is:

How can one better the OSTYPE detection using NMAP? Is this possible?
