NIS Server and Client Requirements

Hi ! Linux user groups
Appreciate if anyone can help.
My new project is to setup up a diskless workstation lab using NIS. So that I can administer the computer lab from my server room and office.

I would like to set up one NIS server(Red Had 7.2) with 50 client(NIS Client) workstations for a computer lab.

Appreciate if you can help to provide information and answer the
following.

1) What is the minimum linux server hardware
requirement. (cpu, ram, nic, harddisk spec and etc) ? for
setting up 50 clients.

2) What is the minimum workstation specification and requirement for each client (cpu, ram, nic, harddisk spec and etc) ?

3) What network speed is recommended ?

4) If I want to include x terminal server which package or service component should I install ? How many disk space is required on
server or client ?

5) Any useful website and documentation which I can look at ?

6) I would like to join the NIS mailing list. Can you provide me the mailing list address.

Thanks for your help.

This is also the response I sent first to your email you sent me in regards to your question:

>1) What is the minimum linux server hardware
>requirement.
>(cpu, ram, nic, harddisk spec and etc) ? for
>setting up 50 clients.

If your not going to have a very large user load, I'd probably recommend at least 500mhz or higher, 128 megs of Ram or higher, 10/100 based NIC would work and a fairly decent size hard disk which depends on what your going to be serving off the server, etc.. this depending on if all the clients would be running different services or all services off the NIS
server.

>2) What is the minimum workstation speciation
>and requirement for each
>client (cpu, ram, nic, harddisk spec and etc)
>?

This you could really judge for yourself as if most of the services are off the NIS server, you could get away with clients around 200mhz or higher, 64 megs of RAM or higher, any 10/100 based NIC and minimal harddisk if again, alot of the services will be ran off the NIS server. Some might only need a gig or less even. You can even setup a diskless workstation that can work.

>3) What network speed is recommended ?

10/100 based network should work fine.

>4) If I want to include x terminal server
>which package or service component should I
>install ? How many disk space is required on
>server or client ?

This all depends really as you have many choices. To save space I would recommend running the X services off the clients, as running from the server and over a network with any connection speed and fast server will use alot of resources/bandwidth and only slow everything down.

>5) Any useful website and documentation which
>I can look at ?

Always check out www.tldp.org which has some NIS howto's there.

>6) I would like to join the NIS mailing list.
>Can you provide me the mailing list address.

Unfortunately don't know of any but I'm sure a quick search on google.com might find some.

Hope some of my responses help you out in setting up your NIS server and clients.

Looks right to me.

Not totally sure on the pwdutils-2.2.tar.gz but to my understanding its a password utilities package.

Hello,

I'm pretty agree with recommendations of trickykid.

When using NIS - a.k.a. yellow pages - you put common ressources - known as "maps" in NIS vocabulary - on a master NIS server like files :

- passwd for /etc/passwd.
- group for /etc/group
- hosts for /etc/hosts
- protocols
- services and many more possibilities.

The master NIS server and the client NIS workstation don't need a lot of memory to work well for using NIS. But with a lot of maps on master NIS server it's a good thing to have a good network - like 10 Mbits/s or 100 Mbits/s higher and good NIC cards. especially if workstation have remote display X sessions.

HTH.
