nis problem on mandrake 10.0 official

I have a lab of 20 machines running mandrake 10.0 official. One of these machines is an nis server ( using mandrake's default ypserv ) and the rest are nis clients. The total number of users are 130 who will be using these machines, but not at the same time. The users have been created on the server and their home directories are being exported via NFS. The users are primararily using vim to write C code. The problem is that sometimes vim just becomes unresponsive. The keystrokes are echoed on the screen after a lot of time ( in minutes ). What could be the problem?
