NIS on Redhat Enterprise Linux AS4

Hi

I'm trying to set up a NIS server on the above operating system and have run into a problem.

It all seems to work correctly up until the point where we try and run a "make passwd" at which point we are presented with:

Updating Passwd.byname
failed to send 'clear' to local ypserv: RPC: Unknown host
Updating Passwd.byuid
failed to send 'clear' to local ypserv: RPC: Unknown host

Once we do this a ycat passwd will show the changes we created, but we can't login and yppasswd <username> results in:

Unknown Error
yppasswd: User does not exist

However, if we reboot the machine, or do service ypserv restart (or manually stop and start) the machine begins functioning as expected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated to help rectify this problem.

Thanks in advance

Simon

You might be trying to run make when ypserv is not running. Have you got ypserv to start at boot?

What does rpcinfo -p localhost say?

Since it is saying "unknown host" - you might want to check your /etc/hosts.

Thanks for your reply.

I tried to do rpcinfo -p localhost and was told that the it was an unknown host (Although it did work with the server name). I checked the hosts file and noticed there was no localhost entry. I added this to the file and it now seems to all work correctly.

Thanks again

Simon
