Is keeps a centralized record of users/password, groups, hosts, etc.

is it something like "active directory" in windows ?
Somewhat, but more limited in its functionality.

what for this service is meant ?
This is answered in question 1. In its day, NIS was good. OpenLDAP would be simpler in my mind.

How can i configure it ?
Sorry, but read a whole lot of manuals. My advice, use another protocol/service.

It can be a substitue, it really depends on what is going to be on the network. What type of objects are shared, how do you want users authenticated, where do you want the control over network object to be. At some point, each directory service has its benifits.

if i learn about ldap, can i forget NIS ???
It could, again it all depends on what your trying to accomplish
