NIS calls refused

Hi everyone

My server has "suddenly" stopped responding to NIS RPC calls (ypproc_domain, ypproc_master, ypproc_match, etc).

I am using RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 AS, and had NIS operating correctly. Since then I have applied some errata updates, including one or 2 kernel updates. NIS stopped functioning after the latest reboot.

Similar messages appear in /var/log/messages depending on what NIS calls I try to make.

1) 'ypcat passwd' from the server:
ypserv[8073]: refused connect from 127.0.0.1:657 to procedure ypproc_domain (MYNISDOMAIN,;0)

2) 'ypcat passwd' from the client:
ypserv[8073]: refused connect from 192.168.168.65:622 to procedure ypproc_domain (MYNISDOMAIN,;0)

3) login attempts from the client fail and do not appear in the logs of the server, but show up in the client logs:
May 4 12:01:49 kabron1 sshd(pam_unix)[5603]: check pass; user unknown
May 4 12:01:52 kabron1 sshd(pam_unix)[5603]: 1 more authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=192.168.168.59

It looks like the map files aren't being shared by the NIS server, but I am not familiar enough with NIS to know for certain.

I have verified that all the NIS settings are restored after a reboot.

I have installed a fresh (unpatched) copy of Enterprise AS 3 on a different machine and set it up as an NIS domain server with no success.

I have also tried to use the "fresh" machine to connect as a client to the original NIS domain server. I get the same problems as with trying to connect from my other clients.

Can anyone help?

Thanks very much!
