I seem to have about the same problem,
i installed mandrake secure on one pc with 3 NIC and after the installation i have to access the pc via HTTPSon port 8443. When i try to access it the station dont see it...
the firewall cant ping 127.0.0.1 and it cant ping its own IP
i couldnt seen eth0 when i used ifconfig so i add the interface with:
ifconfig eth0 ip-addr
ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0
ifconfig eth0 broadcast 10.193.1.0
when i type route, i had no route at all, so i had one...
route add default gw ip-of-gw

but it still cant see its own interfaces
when it boot, it OKs all three interfaces
any idea?

127.0.0.1 is the computer's own tcp/ip stack (the part of the OS that runs tcp/ip) and if you can't ping that address then the networking setup of your OS isn't set up correctly. This is seperate from and set up before any network cards in that a normal linux install even with no net card should be able to ping 127.0.0.1 which is called loopback and shows up as the "lo" interface when you do ifconfig -a
