NFS problem

Hi friends,

I have 2 desktop PCs running Linux Red Hat 8.0. I had configured the NFS server on the machines and I had created the export file and had exported the file using exportfs -a -v command from the server. After that when i tried to mount the server shared directory it gave me an error like "mount: RPCort mapper failure - RPC : unable to receive" How can i solve this problem? my both PC are able to ping each other with ping utility.

Thanks

Have u started the nfs service on the host that should act as NFS server?
Do 'chkconfig --list' to check if the NFS service is enabled on boot, then do '/etc/init.d/<nfsservice> start' substitute for the name of the NFS service on RedHat... running gentoo here and don't remember the name of the service on RedHat.

Also, from the client, do:
# rpcinfo -p <other nfs server>
and see if mountd is up and running. Note that you'll need the client's mountd to run before you can mount other NFS shares.

Howzit

The service that is not running is the portmap service which controls RPC connections make sure they are running on both PC.

Use this cmd rpcinfo -p <other nfs server> that ho_10 mentioned and u can use this cmd from the client pc showmount -e <nfs server ip addr>

ciao

Once rpcinfo has told you about the portmapper, and you've started it, if it still doesn't work, the firewall catches me sometimes, especially the default Redhat configuration:
The portmapper uses the loopback address. Make sure it does exist in /etc/hosts, and your firewall is not blocking it (big one for me). Also, the firewall often needs a hole poked in it for nfs from your other machine (and vice-versa).
For starters, do an iptables -F (as root), and see if it suddenly starts working.
