just out of curiosity, why dont you use autofs instead of fstab? autofs does not run until the computer is fully up and running and the user attempts to access the share point. works great for both cifs and nfs mounts.

i know it is being replaced with something else, sorry no clue what its called atm, but it works and is very simple to setup and configure.
