NEWBIE wants to setup LAN
I have a Win98 box and a Mandrake 8 connected to my DSL router. I want to setup the Mandrake box to be a fileserver for my Win98 box. Where should I start?
(From what I can tell, my Win98 box doesn't even see a network -- clicking on Network Neighborhood just gets me an error message...)
Thanks!

well, teh windows side of things is not gonna really be supported here, but you need to read the networking howto on linuxdoc.org you'll also want to understand samba once you've a basic network established.

I've just gone through the same thing, for Windows to start networking you'll need to login (automate this as its a royal pain, can be achieved with something like Tweakui from M$). Set up the same username and password that u use to login to windows to login to the linux box. Set up Samba on the linux box, there's lots of good doco at www.samba.org or in the MAN pages, either way in Madrake 8 just starting up Samba's web interface gives lots of clues how to do it.
Just make sure you're networked in Windows first, ie Windows login, TCP/IP etc and login!!! otherwise you'll be blaming the linux box when Windoze is the culprit

if you use 'share level' sharing in windoze, instead of 'user level' (check the control panel for this), then you don't need any user/pass login for either computer. simply share resources on win98 and the linux box can smbmount them. setup samba server on the linux box. give them ip's that are in the same sub net , or use DHCP server on the linux box, run some cable, and you're done! i have a similar setup with cable internet on my redhat box serving/routing/firewalling my other computers.

setting up network
Hi, to ALL
I'm very new to LINUX, but worked on Windows for a'bout 5 years.
Now , I want to switch over to Linux. My problem is, I have a home network set up with 3 comp.. , where one is now running Linux(*Mandrake 8.0) in duel boot with Windows98 and the other 2 is running win...98.
If I boot the machine in Win.. then I can see it on the lan, but if I boot it up in Linux, I dont see it on the lan.
I used the "harddrake" option to configure my lancard, seems to work fine.
If there is any1 who can help me, please ! = I will be grateful !!!

What do you mean by "see" it on the lan? are you pinging it, or just browsing with Network Neighborhood, or do you mean when logged into the Linux box you have no lan access?

Dns Resolution
Tiffy01,
Sounds like you are having the usual Dns resolution problem. If you are familiar with the "ping" command try pinging to and from your Linux box. You will probably get replies. If so the network is functioning properly and you are having the name resolution problem. Do a search on this forum for "dns", "ping", or "resolution" and you should find many threads posted with solutions to problems similar to yours.
Steve
Sorry about the ping advice. I was writing this post while you posted your last post. (Does that even make sense?)

I believe you are wanting to resolve 2 problems here... one is having all machines be able to resolve the names of each other, and second being able to move files among all 3 machines.
There's a program called Samba which should solve the file sharing problem as well as having the windows machine find the linux machine on the network.
In order to have the linux machine see the windows machines, you need to edit the /etc/hosts file and put the hostnames & IP addresses of the windows machines in there.
