newbie samba network w/ router

Sorry for my newbieness, but I have been reading things and changing settings in config files, but with no success. I will list off problems or questions. I appreciate any answers to any questions I can get. Thanks:

Two computers: Win95, RH9
Can ping back and forth across router to each computer.

1. I have a router and can't get an answer whether I can set up a network using a router or if I have to get a hub or sqitch to set up a network?

2. Have tried to set up a domain on the Linux machine, with no success of win95 logging in to domain. Also have tried as a peer to peer. Basics of setting up a peer to peer or domain using samba?

3. I know this is a linux site so please don't throw fruit, but on win95 machine when I click network neighborhood's entire network I get "can't browse the network", any thoughts?

4. Linux machine does not send hostname to router. Have placed hostname in /etc/hosts and recently played with settings in /etc/syslog/network and networking files?

These are the ones I can think of for now. Again I apologize for this being fairly basic, but I am quite frustrated with reading and not feeling like anything is working that I try. It seems futile, so thank you for some direction.

A router is 'usually' an option for a hub/switch, so you CAN built a network with a router and 2 computers.
As you write, you can ping from/to Linux/Windows, so your LAN seem to be running.

But are you sour that you ping from Linux to Windows and from Windows to Linux ?
Because when you write " I get "can't browse the network" " the firsts questions will be : is your network up ? is your LAN-cable connected ? is your driver up-to-date ? is your IP well configure ?
And second question will be : and your router ? is it an 'administrable' one ? have you set some *specials* rules one this router ?

If you have instaled RH9 with the samba pakage,
disable the 'encrypted password' in samba.conf (not suported in Win95, if I remember good, it's suppoerted for WNT4 SP6+, W2KSP0+, WXPSP0+)
set a smb shared for a Win95 directory
and set the IP adress/mask/gateway
you should try this : (in a command line windows) :

(with your server IP, username and password !)
those line are a dump from my console under Linux RedHat 7.3 connecting to a W2K Server, with encrypted password.
Sorry I don't have time to do the same dump for a Win95

[root@Main-Frame root]# smbclient //192.168.0.22/Mirroring_80Go -U user
added interface ip=192.168.0.51 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to 192.168.0.22 failed (Called name not present)
session request to 192 failed (Called name not present)
Password:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

First, thanks for the reply.

I am working through some of the other things you talk about, but I just tried to ping to my win95 pc and it didn't work so why would that be? But I can ping from win95 to linux.

How in linux do you find a shared file or folder? is the syntax cd \\mywin95pc\sharedfolder?

Yes, for me I would to try answer for your problem, but I'm not sure it can help you more or not, if not don't mind me.

For your problem you can't connect the both your PC (Linux box and win95 box ) with the network browsing.
Yes, I didn't know you already add something on your win95 PC' regedit file or not? for more information please read the win95-PlainPassword.reg file. You use RH9, so I don't know where is it, but for me I use RH 7.2, this file was located in /usr/share/samba-2.2.1a/docs.

I wish you get to be success.

thanks
vuthachh.

more details about smbclient

1)

I am working through some of the other things you talk about, but I just tried to ping to my win95 pc and it didn't work so why would that be? But I can ping from win95 to linux.

???
I'm not a god in English,
but in your first post you write :

> Two computers: Win95, RH9
> Can ping back and forth across router to each computer.

Doesn't it mean that your ping succesfully from W95 to RH and from RH to W95 ?
???

2)

How in linux do you find a shared file or folder? is the syntax cd \\mywin95pc\sharedfolder?.

In Linux, with samba, to connect in a samba shared folder (for file or printer access),
you must specified a 'service', that mean the root folder of the windows shared.

Example (look in my first post in this thread):

From a RH console:

> smbclient //192.168.0.22/Mirroring_80Go -U user

mean :

smbclient : the progam to connect to a samba server, as a samba client
// : the network
192.168.0.22 : the IP of the server (better to use IP, if you use the name of the server you *MUST* be sure that you have a WINS server or something else to resolve the computer name)
/ : separator char
Mirroring_80Go : the name of the 'samba servie', mean the 'Share name' you set in your windows box.
-U : force the samba client to send a login and a password to the server
user : the name of the login you have set in windows box, the password will be ask later

the [-U user] is optional, you can try without it.

Linux promt> cd \\mywin95pc\sharedfolder

won't do anything ... if you'r not connect to your samba server

from the samba promt [smb: \>] :
to explore a samba share use [ls] and [cd] like in a linux console
to quit smbclient and disconect from server, use [q]
for example look in my first post in this thread

router

for your ping problem, try a direct connection with a cross cable to check your LAN setting in both RH and Win Box, then add your router between the tow box.
So you will have more data about your LAN/ROUTER/BOX configurations and bugs.

Sorry about the confusion with pinging, it appears that originally I was able to ping both ways, then only one way, but now both ways again so that is solved.

And somehow I now have a working peer to peer between the two computers, thank you all for your help.

What I find now is that I can browse the network ,ie both computers, on win95's network neighborhood. I see my printer, which is attached to the linux box and works fine on that box. When I set up the printer on my win95 box everything seems to work fine, but I can't get it to print. I have tried to print a test page and to print from MS Word. Both of these enter the windows queue and then goes away as if the print job worked, but nothing enters the linux queue and the printer doesn't react at all.

thoughts?

I am learning something new everyday. I was reading some stuff and found that I should look in /var/log/samba/wincomputer.log what I found:
[2004/06/27 10:23:50, 0] passdb/pampass.c:smb_pam_passcheck(827)
smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User pcguest !

This shows up both when I access network neighborhood and when I try to print, but I don't have trouble accessing files on my linux machine from, so I wonder what affect PAM would have on printing that doesn't affect file searching. Any thoughts?
