Newbie question

I just installed Linux and waiting for "my Bible" to come in the mail. But in the meantime... I have my network setup a little differently than most others. My cable goes into my Win2000 machine, and then using a seperate network card it is plugged into a hub and to the other comps. I was trying to set the ip to static, so I could use samba to share this comp with my other comps. But in doing so, I lost my connection to the internet. I know I am going about this all wrong. What is the proper way to going about setting the linux machine as a server inside a network using samba, yet still have access to the internet? Thanks.

Diego.

You need to assign to your Linux machine IP from the same network as the NIC on W2k machine it's connected to. And default gateway to the W2k machine.
So the IP may be static, but make sure the gateway is set.
