Question Newbie networking question.

I am using Mandrake 8. KDE interface. This is my first linux box.
It seems that when i install my OS my networking works. but the next day when i turn it on it does not. it cant find an ip.

My question is I am on a small network of 3 computers at my home. I do not have a router, and We all run through a hub using our cable modem as the proxy.

I want to know if the reason that it is not finding the IP when i startup is because The other computers (win OS's) are connected to the internet already.

I was told that if i disconnect the other computers from the internet and restart my linux box it should find my IP. Can anyone help me???? Thanks!

Cable Modem?

Are U using Media One cable modem? if U do, they want U to pay extra for every PC U hook up to the internet and U r supposed to give them the MAC address of the other NIC cards that U r using on your other machines, I don't know if this is your case.

Mavenali,

Your best bet would be to get a gateway router, or use a cheap linux box as the gateway. I'm networking my 3 boxen with a Netgear RT-314 4-port router which connects to my cable modem and it works very well, although I could probably get tighter security if I set up a Linux gateway/firewall.

Cable Modem?

You could check this site HTTP://WWW.CLARKCONNECT.ORG This is not a new distro but Red Hat stripped down and secured, very easy to intall and configure if you have an old PC to use as a gateway.
Clarkconnect help you to recicle that old and tired pc to put it to good use, I am not a Linux guru and I do use Cable modem.
