I just installed SuSE Linux 10.0 on a spare hard drive, and really have no clue what I'm doing. I'm in a dormitory, and with Windows XP I can usually plug the ethernet cable into the wall and I'm connected to the internet. No such luck with Linux. Can anyone tell me how I get started?
You should probably post what hardware you have, there are people here that can spot problems right away if the wrong hardware is used.
I just installed linux for the first time also and I had to enable the Interface after it finished installing. Not sure why it didn't enable it to begin with but after doing that everything worked.
I'm at work on my windows machine so I can't remember exactly but if you click on the little green icon in the lower left and go to the Control Center or something like that, it should be in there. I'll edit my post when I get home to be more specific.
General info that helps in this area include: Window manager (KDE, Gnome, et cetera), Network card, and whether you set up your network during install (doesn't sound like you did).
I got it to work just from messing with settings in the Control Center, even though I'm not exactly sure what I did. Something with the DHCP server, and I think I assigned my computer a network name. Anyway, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
