Newbie confused - socks & vpn clarification needed

Hello everyone,

I need some clarifications about socks an openvpn.
I have an account at a commercial vpn provider. Now using nm-applet (NetworkManager) I can connect to the vpn provider's server using openvpn. So my understanding is that once I've established the vpn connection, every outgoing connection of my computer goes first through openvpn's port to the vpn server.
Now I can also make use of a Socks proxy connection. After some research I'm not sure what the difference really is between socks and vpn.

Is it the same if I configure ever software to use a particular Socks Proxy or redirect all connections through VPN? Does it make sense to use both a the same time (example torrent client) ?

Thank you for your help

Regards,

Chris

Not sure what you are referring to, how exactly are they the same? one is a proxy, the other is an encrypted network tunnel.
