New User

I just created a new user, i gave him a home directory and everything, set his permissions, password, etc....but when i switch over to that user, it says the desktop is locked and it is the root users, and is in the root user group, how do i fix this so that user can use his desktop and what not? By the way I am using Mandrake 10

Did you create this directory as root? It sounds like you did. If so, it belongs to root since he, you, made it. To correct this boo boo, , do something like this:

Code:
chown -R <user name here>:users /home/<user name here>
Replace the <user name here> with the correct name. No spaces around the : either. Mine for example would be

Code:
chown -R dale:users /home/dale
That should work. I won't mention how many times I did something like that.

Hope that works. It should.

Oh what the heck. "ch" change, "own" owner. Therefore, change owner. That should clear up some confusion. chgrp, care to guess?

Need more info, man chown or man chgrp.

You said when you switch over, do you mean log out and log back in as the new user, or simply su? If you su'ed, then whichever user started X is the owner.
