Question New tunnel connection created each time VPN is used

I am using Ubuntu Mate 14.04 and I connect to an OpenVPN server manually, using the command line (could not find a GUI application) and an .opvn configuration file.

I noticed that each time I reconnect to a VPN server this way, a new tunnel interface is created: first there is only tun0, next time I use VPN there are tun0 and tun1, and so on. Only after reboot those interfaces are gone.

Am I doing something wrong? Can I avoid the accumulation of those tun network interfaces? Can I get rid of them somehow without rebooting?

My knowledge of linux networking is less than minimal. Thanks in advance for any help.

The .ovpn is for Windows. You should use .conf file.

Thank you. I am still looking for an answer about those multiplying tunnel interfaces, though in the meantime I was able to find a way to make the gnome networking applet work in my Mate desktop and configure and run my VPN connection from it.

All I got from my VPN provider is a .ovpn file. I do not have (and do not know how to make) a .conf file.

But now that I use the gnome network connections utility (configured using a .ovpn file and some additional settings) instead of the command line, the same tun0 seems to be used all the time, no new ones created.
