New kernel = no internet ???


OK, I give up. I've been working on this problem for hours and I can't figure it out. I upgraded my Slackware 9.1 to the 2.6.6 kernel and now my eth0 can't see the internet. On boot up, when it tries to get it's IP (I guess that's what it's doing) I get this error message:

DCHP[475] timed out waiting for DCHP_ACK
DCHP[475] broadcasting DHCP_DISCOVER
DCHP[475] timed out waiting for valid DHCP response

Here's my ifconfig -a:

My eth1 is connected to my XP box and everything worked fine under 2.4.22 (which I still have and gave myself the option to select in LILO). I'm using my Slack box as a router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you connect to the internet? ADSL? Cable modem?

By cable modem.

I figured out a way to make it work. Perhaps inelegant, but it worked.

#mv /usr/src/linux/.config /usr/src/linux/tmp.config

#cp /boot/config-ide-2.4.22 /usr/src/linux/.config

#make menuconfig <make no changes to the configuration>

#make

#make install

#make modules

#make modules_install

#reboot

$enjoy 2.6.6

you could do a

#make oldconfig

to get the working configuration

and proceed with 2.6 kernel compile .. that will take care of many things.

Re read your post ... you did almost the same thing
