Netzero on Netopia R2020
 

I have a linux box that I want to use for a friend so that he can connect to the internet through a Netopia R2020 Dual Analog router. I cannot seem to get the Netopia to dial up to his ISP, Netzero, however. I have used his username/password combo with both PAP and CHAP mode. Is there another protocol that Netzero uses? It is the paid netzero service - not the Netzero HighSpeed. Any thoughts on getting this working on the router?

Well, although that would get it running on the linux box, i'd like to have the router do the dialing and deal with the connection process. The router itself is designed with two 56k modems in it for its WAN/Internet connection. So what i'm trying to do, basically, is have the router deal with the netzero part, and have the computers behind it hook up as if it were DSL or Cable or T1, etc... I was able to do this with MSN, but netzero is a complete mystery to me...

Oh, that is different. Netzero uses a proprietary software client. Unless your router can run a software package you will not be able to use Netzero as your ISP. Their platinum and "high speed" options both use the same client.

netzero and juno encrypt the username and passwords. you may be able to obtain the actual username and password w/ a program called rasspy

if you can get the username and password, it's a basic dialup connection.

Okay, I can confirm the rasspy program works. It runs under windows gui.
Modify the shortcut for netzero in windows.
Login to netzero
While logged in open the rasspy window box. It will tell you your username and password.

You can then use that with a standard PPP dialup connection. This disables the toolbar netzero uses.

It took me a few attempts to get it to show up correctly though, and a couple of reboots.

I can tell that the program is running, however, the system that it is installed on is an XP system - so the command window where the password shows up (I'm assuming) doesn't stay open. How can I get it to stay open? or is the program just not working...

Run the modified netzero shortcut.

When prompted for username and password, enter them, then click on "connect".

When you see the netzero dial screen start, ctrl-alt-del.

On the applications tab, kill the netzero process running.

You will be left with a rasspy window with your login and password details.

This does work on XP.
