Not sure how to progress this, but I think it's some kind of systemd-logind issue. When it next fails, use nmcli as user and then as root to show the available connections. Also, run the loginctl commands given previously. That might demonstrate the issue more clearly. A bug report may be necessary.

Now that I'm reading your opening post again, it's starting to form a better picture It's not a NM matter so much as a logind/display manager issue...
Quote:
When I log out and log back in, sometimes NetworkManager forgets my VPN settings - nm-applet shows the wifi connection as normal (and it works) but click on it and "VPN Connections" offers only "Configure VPN" or "Disconnect VPN". It fails to show the VPN that normally lives there.
You mentioned that you're running i3 window manager, but what is the underlying display manager in use here?

Edit: I can see you're using LXDM (from your session output).

I'm at the limits of my knowledge here, but this thread might be relevant

Thanks for all that! I'll certainly follow up and try some of the suggestions there.

I admit I'm a bit puzzled as to why it would be an intermittent thing rather than hard, but I'll see. If only (!) I could make it fail more reliably!!!

Cheers

Bob
