Networking with Linux Redhat v.9

Hi there,
I am new to Linux Redhat v.9 and would appreciate anyone who can help me.

I used to have two Windows 2000 computers connected to each other via a network cable. Now, I have just changed one of the computers to a Linux Redhat v.9 OS. The computer that is used to connect to the internet is of Windows 2000 environment and I'm using a Broadband connection. What I need to know is how should I go about to configure my Linux Redhat v.9 to connect to the other computer so that I can surf the web and share files? Whenever I start up the computer (Redhat), the status for "determining ip information" always "failed".

What should I do? Thanks!

Regards

- do u have static assigned ip from ur service provider? Or u used DHCP for obtaining ip? make sure u have a DHCP to through an IP.

and u have to make one box NAT to share internet connection.

u can try below script for enabling a basic NAT and keep it at startup:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

iptables -F
iptables -A forward -s x.x.x./x.x.x.x -d x.x.x./x.x.x.x -j MASQ

-s (source ip and mask) -d (destination ip and mask)

if u go to system tools and network devices + configure ur eth card
ie u will need ur ip addy from your win 2000 to put in gateway. u will need to put in an ip addy for your linux box.
in static set ip addy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ( your ip)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway the ip addy of your win 2000

in dns servers u will need to enter the dns 1+2 of your ips
or check the box auto obtain dns

under the route tab enter destination network ur win 2000 ip subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway win 2000 addy

u can also goto /etc/resolv.conf
and edit the file eg
#gedit /etc/resolv.conf

and add the following

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ( your dns 1)
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (your dns 2)
