Networking with a 3c509 and Fedora isn't working

I just installed Fedora yesterday, am new to linux, and haven't got a working network connection.

The 3c509 "boomerang" is found by the system, but getting an IP address fails (it's set up for DHCP). I've tried feeding it a static IP--which it accepts and doesn't return the "Determining IP information for eth0... failed" message--but it still doesn't work. I can't ping the router. I can, of course, ping 127.0.0.1.

/etc/modules.conf lists "alias eth0 3c59x", /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 lists "DEVICE=eth0" and "ONBOOT=yes."

It worked in Windows 2000. Any ideas? Searches were rather unfruitful.

Dan

What happens when you do:
ifconfig eth0 xx.xx.xx.xx netmask xx.xx.xx.xx ?

"ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.7 netmask 255.255.255.0" (is that what I should enter?) did something. "ifconfig" tells me things like "inet: 192.168.0.7." But it doesn't work any better!

Thanks for the help; any other ideas?

I've also tried switching which PCI slot the card is in and turning PnP off in the BIOS--no go.

I decided to pop a Knoppix disc in the machine and can verify that yes, the NIC works and can talk to the router and the rest of the Internet.

Talking

A solution!

Some more searching and reading yielded this link, which details that "kudzu" can be responsible for not letting 3c509 NICs work properly. So, I disabled the kudzu service, rebooted, and away I go! It works!
