Networking Two Samba Media Players
Hi to all I'm new here so please be gentle.
I have two Sumvision media player enclosures with Samba installed (clones of Mvix and traxdata). When i switch either of them on they announce themselves to the network (on Win 7 PC)as 'Venus' they both have fixed (different) IP addresses. The problem is when they are both on only the one that connected to the network first is visible, the only way to see the other one is to switch both off start the other one and restart the Win 7 machine. I have copies of the firmware old and the latest for Sumvision/Mvix Ultio/Traxdata. I think that i need to go in via Telnet and some how change the log on name, I do not have a clue how to do this. Hi andybrody, Can you access both servers by IP address? Do the servers have a web gui for access/setup? If they are running Linux inside and don't have any gui you'll likely need to connect with ssh not telnet. What is the actual make/model, etc. of these devices?

When trying via telnet I can log in to Root and get this response Venus login: root warning: cannot change to home directory BusyBox v1.1.3 (2009.12.18-04:22+0000) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. / # hostname Venus / # etc/hostname -sh: etc/hostname: Permission denied I have changed the hostname temporarily but cannot remember how I did this and it is only temporary it does not stick at reboot. It appears that the reason etc/hostname is permission denied as it in the flash. This apparently means that the firmware has to be modified before install to change the hostname, do you have any ideas how to do this I do have copies of the firmware old and latest and different manufactures. I have tried to view them in notepad but i makes no sense at all, do you know anyone how might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks for viewing and your help Andy |
Change the netbios names. Two servers with the same name will confuse the wins and cause problems. Samba tends to work more with netbios unless configured as a domain controller.

In the smb.conf file you can change the behaviour of samba. But when i typed my response, the second post and yours wasn'tthere yet. Forgot to refresh the window after opening it, anyway, you should find it in /etc/samba/smb.conf
The problem you will face is getting into the folder based on your earlier reply. If it does work checkout the samba webpage, there are great loads of config options in the documents section |

Can you not browse to them by accessing them by name under Windows 7? So, for example, you'd open \\192.168.1.12\my_share on your PC? I've not come across this situation though so I'll admit I don't know whether WINS will screw things up.

That sounds more like a problem with your Windows install than anything else. If you try to map a drive to an IP is should not try to open the IP address as web site.
