Networking to linux from Windows XP

I am trying to connect to my Mandrake Linux 9.2 machine from
Windows XP machine for backups. I open Windows explorer
and under "My Network Places", I can see the work group, computer
name, and shared directory on the Mandrake machine. However,
when I click on the shared disrectory, Windows XP ask me for a user name and password.
The password on my Linux machine does not work and I can not
access the contents.

When I enter the Linux username, Windows XP substitutes the Linux username with the XP machine name and my Linux username.

Example:
Mandrake User Name=> myusername

Substitued XP username => XP Machine name\myusername

It seems as though the Linux user names are not being
communicated properly.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

You will probably need to run samba. I have written a guide which can be found at http://www.notgotaclue.co.uk/how-samba.htm

Thanks so much for pointing this out. I looked in mandrake linux and found
a "samba windows file sharing" tool in the Webmin administration tool. The unix
users needed to be converted to Samba users and given passwords. Once
this was done, everything worked.

Thanks for the help,
