Networking suggestions

Hi guys, hows it going.

Just a quick one.

I want to setup a network between to PC,S. What equipment will I need and what do you recommend.Remember i,m in the UK so I may not be able to get hold of US equipment that easily.

BTW it may be a dual Linux system or a Linux and Windows, havnt decided yet. And the possibilty of connecting to ADSL/Cable would be nice also.

Thx guys

Network cards, that will work with Mandrake 8, if you want to share the connection you would want three 2 in the host and 1 in the other machine. Get the realtek chipset *cheaper* or if you can afford them Intel or 3com. As well you will need a hub. Mandrake 8 comes with a super easy connection sharing tool, Its in the tool thats on the desktop for kde, Might be best to do a fresh install if you can, that way during that time you can set up your NIC you want to go outbound to the net, eth0 or eth1 Mandrake will ask which one will be on the net. Easy way to tell the difference get two different nics that are supported. IE 3com and Realtek so you know which is which, if you know your computer name on cable then, just run it dhcp unless you have stitic, there there are only a couple more things you have to put in. Once you have the single NIC you want to be the provider set up for both pc's, just configure the other dhcp and leave it till after the install is finished. To connect the other machine, just have the NIC outbound connected into the modem, the Second NIC internal connected to the hub, *not in uplink* and then just plug in the other computer and set the 2nd pc for dhcp.

Mandrake 8 will auto set all your scripts for you. AS LONG as your one nic is correctly set up on the Internet. If so, you are set just let it do its thing, it will prompt you for cd 1, and install and configure. That is how to set up for the Internet Sharing. To share files you have many options FTP is the most simple. Just have it set up to only run on your internal network. If you do not want outside coming in.

I am currently fighting Slackware to get this working at the moment, I have not found another Linux package that makes it as easy as Mandrake to do this. Good luck
run down
All parts you can easily get in UK. I would stay away from USB stuff.
3 NICS
1 Hub/Switch 10 or 10/100 your choice
3 Network Cables, just make sure there not crossover.
and your mandrake cd.

So you know I have set up that a few times. with ME, 2k, Linux all from the Mandrake gateway. All set to dhcp and everyone of them ran great with no issues.

If you use modem replace the modem with a Nic and set up internal the same way and you can share your dial up account.

Hi
I used a netgear network starter pack, cost about £40 from pc world. Problems setting it up (fa311!) but all fine now. Loaded RH7.0 on my laptop yesterday, and it found the netgear 410tx pcmcia nic all by itself. It worked automatically, I was gobsmacked.
All you need is a couple of NIC's a hub and cable. I have now wired my house with cat5 cable, and enjoy surfing my nice stable linux desktop ppp connection from the living room.

Of course, if you ONLY want to connect two PCs (or 1 PC, 1 laptop,...) you don't need a hub. You need a special cable (can't remember the name) which you plug into both network cards. Works well on my machines. All the cables I have seen are red, but that may not always be the case.

Saves you a bit of money...

RecoilUK,

If you're not in a hurry you can keep an eye on Scan's today only web site at http://www.todayonly.co.uk - they have some really good deals from time to time on networking kit. I got a 8port 10/100 switch, 3 RealTek 8139 based 10/100Mb duplex cards (cheap but they work OK) and 5 CAT5 cables for £70 all-in The networking itself is pretty straight forward.

cheers

Yes you are talking about crossover cables, that will enable pc's direct links with eachother thru NIC's without a hub, You can set it up that way, but in the end, its easier for adding stations, if friends some over for lan party etc.

But crossover will work. And color can be anything. i have crossover in blue and grey.

Don't quite follow this! There are not really any problems with networking Windows (no more than you usual get with Windows anyway) to linux if thats what you mean, and yeah - FTP will work from Windows just fine.

cheers

Hi again

I got two more questions for you guys.

Will it work with a dial up account instead of adsl or cable (will the fact that the outside line isnt allways on cause problems). I do intend to get one of these services but none are available as yet.

The second question is, has anybody got Linux working with a cable connection or BT,s ADSL Home service (you know the one with the USB Modem)

Thx guys

1.The fact that the connection isn't always on won't be a problem for your internal LAN (until you try to connect to the outside world, of course ).

2. My Win and Linux boxen are connected to an @home cable modem via a Netgear 4-port router/gateway. The setup has been working flawlessly for about a year. I'm in the US though, so your providers in the UK could have peculiar quirks that I'm not aware of.

I don't know anyone with a BT setup or wether the device is supported under Linux yet... I'm using a BlueYonder cable modem which works fine as its connected through a network card.

As for the dialup - no problem - before I had my cable modem I used a dialup connection to get my LAN out onto the Internet...

cheers

thanks badseed!!!

i never knew about crossover cables were needed
to go directly from pc to pc
i was just about to buy a hub when i really dont need
one

that should be wonderful

i have a question though

my linksys router shows all 3 leds lit up for winblows
but only one LED is lit for mandrake 8.0
is this why i can access the internet but cannot ping
either one on the LAN?

i can ping the loopback

i can ping the router

but i cannot ping 192.168.1.105

all behind a linksys router sr41

mandrake 8.0 and w2000 pro

i DO have internet on both machines though

so, in conclusion... i disconnected the patch cable between
the 2 pcs (need a crossover cable) and now

am trying to ping through the router/switch on the LAN
side of things the network is 192.168.1.1 so
mandrake is 192.168.1.101

and someone pls tell me how to find out the ip of w2000 pro?

anyways anyone have any ideas? i think i SHOULD be able to
ping my mandrake from winblows.....

what do i do?
