Networking Problems between Suse 10.0 & Ubuntu 5.10


hi every1 sorry to bother you guys but im stuck as ive been searching around and couldnt find anything that could help me well currently my problem is
I have Suse 10.0 as a gateway that's working perfectly i decided to set up a second pc to learn about networking in linux as i am newb/rookie
I connected the computers via an ethernet thru a crossover cable on ubuntu i set up the computers ip as 192.168.0.11 i set the gateway ip as 192.168.0.100 (which is the ethernet ip of the gatway machine) i set up the dns ip's aswell restarted both pc's but cant ping eachother both pcs recognize the ethernet cards i pretty much tried everything that came 2 my mind and everything i saw on the net
any help will be appriciated thanks in advance
and sorry about the long post

Ok, can you verify that the cable is actually crossover? The easiest way to tell is to look at both the ends: If the colour coded wires are wired identically for both ends then it ISN'T a crossover cable - but, if the colour coded wires are wired differently for both ends then it IS a crossover cable.

If there is one thing you should know about diagnosing a computer problem it would be to always check the physical hardware and cabling first. This means you will need to verify that the network cable (and the actual network card) works properly.

It sounds to me like the cable is at fault. I would try another cable or try using the cable with a hub or switch.

socceroos thnx for ur help but unfortunately thing u have listed arent the problem because i was using the same network cards and cross over cable around 3 days ago back then the machine that had ubuntu was w2k machine acting as a gateway connecting suse onto the internet but i decided to be completely microsoft free and now im trying to make this the gate way and its just isnt working very frustrating probelms thnx soceroo btw where in aus r u im from sydney

im from good ole tassie.

i would also suugest checking your firewalls. i.e use yast in suse and check wether your firewall is blocking access. also, did you foolow a tutorial on making a computer a gateway?
