Question networking problem with windows xp pc

Hi,

I am a complete newbie.

Have installed mandriva linux on a second computer.

Most things work fine. I even managed to connect the linux machine via ethernet to my wireless router and can get out onto the internet.

I don't know how to network my linux machine to my main PC running windows xp. I have an existing network set up with my laptop running xp as well.

I don't really know what i am doing. I gather it has something to do with using samba. A network usergroup has appeared on my windows machine called 'mdkgroup'. I guess i have to allow access to the harddrive (where is that anyway?) etc on my linux pc in order to be seen in the workgroup on my windows machine. I gather also to make changes I need to log in as an administrator which i think i know how to do. Now i am stuck and don't know how to proceed. Any help would be very gratefully received.

read SAMBA HOWTO.
from www.tldp.org
then config smb.conf to use the same workgroup as winxp and set security = share so that you wont need a password to connect to the linux samba.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem. Not new to Linux, but new to setting up Samba and working with workgroups.

I have followed the guide posted. My Windows PC and Samba configuration file share the same workgroup name. There is no firewall device/program blocking the flow of traffic between the computers. I made a simple share to share one of my home folders, but Windows won't pick it up. My LAN connection in Windows has both Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing "protocols" enabled.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
