Are you sure system knows which card you have?. Does it have IRQ assigned?.
If you have no modules in lsmod is because you have no choose 'm' option when you configure the kernel. It is only better to put 'y' option if you are sure of your hardware configuration, and you choose 'y' only in your device.
does ifconfig have eth0?
