Angry networking nic issues... ARGH

I just took an old computer out of retirement to put linux on it and make it a small CS server. I finally manage to get RedHat 6.2 installed (HD issues, unrelated) and I put a brand new NIC in (I'm not sure of the brand). I must have fudged a setting when installing it because when i try to use DHCP (what the sysadmin told me to use) it does not work. In the network configurator in gnome (or whatever starts up when you type startx) I dont have a Hostname, a Domain, any nameservers or anything in all four catagories, except for a loopback device in interfaces. I am out of ideas and nearly out of patience... thanks for any help.

Have you tried running
$# netconf
if its installed, if not, then install the rpm package
linuxconf

It would also help if you knew the brand, make, and type of network card.
