networking laptop DVD

what's the best way to access a laptop DVD player (XP) on another computer running linux, preferably automatically like any optical drive? right now i have to manually mount it each time and create a symlink from /mnt/dvd to /dev/dvd. then i have to make sure i have started the dvd in windows first and run it for a minute or two (at least past the fbi warning) or else i get encryption failures and it won't play in linux.

maybe this is totally obvious and i'm having a brain lapse, but something about it being dvd, over the network, and also needing the symlink is messing me up. thx.
