Unhappy networking in guest linux in vmware


Hi,

I have winXP as host and linux as Guest in Vmware. I have an internet connection with static IP provided by ISP. I want to access internet in host as well as in guest linux but I dont know much about networking so I am not able to connect to internet in guest.
Could anyone pls help me...

I don't know anything about VMware, but I'm using vbox of sun and vbox provides two ways to connect to a network. Connection-sharing and NAT (name-adress-translation). Since you have a static IP, I think, you have to set up the vmware-network for NAT (that is what I would do with vbox).

The difference between connection-sharing and Nat is, that with connection-sharing your guest-machine uses the hosts netwok-adapter and then tries to get an ip-configuration from your dhcp-server, so that the guest becomes a member in your network. With NAT the guest gets its ip-configuration in a completely different (virtual) network on your host-machine and will not be part of your network, but can connect to the internet as well.

I have NAT setting in VMware as you have mentioned, but don't know how to assign IP to guest Linux? Pls tell me Ip configuration settings.

It should work via dhcp.
How to configure the network on your linuxguest depends on the distribution, please post here which linux-distro you are using.

Hi Markush,

Thanks for your help. It works with DHCP, Now I am able to access Internet in guest linux also. I am learning RHEL5 right now.
