networking a usb printer

I'm planning to buy a new printer soon, but most of the one's I'm looking at have a USB connection only. As I want to share this printer between 2
machines, can I do that in Linux using a USB hub?

If I were you... I would buy an old 10baseT hub and connect the two computers. SAMBA makes it really easy to network a printer over TCP/IP, and it comes with most distros. Although I have heard of networking computers using USB cables I am not personally familiar with it.

Are you using SAMBA to share through the router?
Could you post a little about how you've setup this share?

I long for the day that no Windoze are on our comps!

My daughter has some learning CD's that were given to us, and these were designed for Win 3.1 and Win 95. Quite old, but good for teaching her (and Chinese friends) English - something we can't get here. If they would run under Wine, we could format Win 98 right out of that comp - that's all we use it for. I just haven't tried to set them up under Wine yet - have enough trouble with it or CrossOver Office on this comp.

Well, I can certainly read, but anything you want to point out would be grand. I'm running Slack with KDE (at the present time) on both these comps. If they could print email with KMail and some stuff from Mozilla Firebird, that would be good, also.

I will give you the short version of how my system is set up and if any of it helps you then we will both happy. First i connect to the internet with a cable modem and that goes to the input of a Lynksys 4 port router by a cat 5 cable. then each of the 4 comps get internet from the router by cat 5 cable, the router assigns auto dhcp IP address's to each comp.. by way of 1 3comm and 2 realtek NIC cards and 1 TrendNet cardbus card in a laptop. I used NFS to setup file sharing between all 4 machines but I was having a problem configuring them until I found a utility called Webmin, I worked for 3 days trying to get sharing to work until I installed Webmin and then I had all of them set up in less than an hour. As for the printers, both printers are hooked up to comp #1 , the HP 7350 by usb cable and the HP 610 by paralell port cable, then I just used printerdrake in mandrake to set them up and told each comp on the network to search for network printers and they all found both printers. I hope some of the info is helpful,Of course this short version represents over 2 weeks of work on my part trying to get all of this to work,I wish you better luck. Hope this helps.

All of my machines are linux machines, I believe you might have to look into SAMBA if you want windows and linux to communicate to each other, you can search this forum for some info on it.
