Not sure if you looked at this, but if you run "ifconfig <NIC>" do you see any errors or dropped packets?

Have you installed firmware-linux-nonfree?

#apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree

I have a linux box used as a router and the Intel NIC was always dropping to 10mbps even though ethtool said it was 1000mbps. The problem seems to have resolved with this package.

again, you need to try to install a new driver. I don't really understand why is it impossible [to download] and what kind of problems you have during compilation. Obviously you need to install kernel headers and compiler to do that, LQ can help you to go through.

update:
After a new fresh install I compiled the current version of the Intel e1000e driver (3.4.2.4), now the performance seems to be okay.
But after every reboot I need to re-add the module. Adding the module to /etc/modules does not work, I need to do a 'rmmod e1000e && modprobe e1000e'.

Is a kind of boot-script enough or is there an elegant version of doing so?

probably you need to remove/rename the old driver (to make it unavailable)
