Network Traffic Stops After High Traffic
I have been having a problem with my network on my FC6 Linux server. The network card appears to lock up under high traffic. It happens most often when streaming videos from the server. If I unplug the cable and plug it back in it starts working again. Tried different cables and routers/switches. Is this a hardware or software issue?
Thanks, Adam |
Is IPv6 enabled?
I had a similar problem with a Vista machine. The solution turned out to be disabling IPv6. Now everything is working as expected.

Thanks for youtr reply.
I checked, and I do not have IPv6 turned on. Either on the linux box or the router. |
My guess would be a cheap network card with a squirrelly linux driver that chokes under high load..
the no-name cards and integrated cards may work... but how well are they supported is the question. Got an intel NIC laying around or a well supported card from another company ? |
Are you using PPPoE by any chance? Particularly with the pppoe client on your linux server? If so this can be a known issue with MSS and MTU. Give this a read http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.cookbook.mtu-mss.html

It's an internal nic I've been working with for a while, and this problem has started within the last few months, I can try to track down another nic.
As for PPPoE, I see I have RP-PPPoE installed, which is probably standard with FC. Would it harm my internet connection to remove it? I have a cable modem, not DSL. |
It should be safe. AFAIK, cable companies don't use PPPoE. DSL providers do as its an easy way for them to use their existing dial-up framework with broadband speeds. In any case you can double check by making sure you don't have ppp0 interface.
