Network tool to detect network traffic?
 

I'm not an expert in networking, but I heard there are some tools that enables you to see the IP numbers in a network that are consuming more bandwidth. Is there an open source software for this purpose? Sometimes here at work our internet gets slow and we would like to find out who is using the resources. thanks!

To pull network bandwidth information you wold want Managed switches / Routers in your infrastructure, then you would poll the SNMP data from the switch to get port bandwidth information. At least that's how I would track down a remote workstation that is consuming high amounts of bandwidth.

Look at this example of using Cisco's Netflow with Linux to find the info you are looking for.
