network system problem..

Im in a Local big network..Almost 100 systems are up(I m sure)including my pc.But i can ping only one system in the network..I can not anyother system..

navaladi@debian:~$ ping
PING ( 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.273 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=0.216 ms

--- ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.216/0.244/0.273/0.032 ms
navaladi@debian:~$ nmap -sP 10.255.240.*

Starting nmap 3.81 ( ) at 2006-03-31 16:03 IST
Host appears to be up.
Nmap finished: 256 IP addresses (1 host up) scanned in 5.396 seconds

But just One hr OneDay Before everything is fine..All the systems are running one..

Router also working..Ping is not blocked.

Can anyone identify the problem.?

hi bruce,
There doesn't seems anythings other than blockage of ICMP (ping).
just as hit n trial 'nmap' with ping option disabled (-p0) and running some other scan like o/s detection. It will make sure whether ping is disabled or not.
