Network stops working after reboot
All Linux Gurus
We have a IBM server which is running Redhat Linux AS 3.0. We are having a strange problem whereby when I reboot the machine the network stops working(ping,telnet,ssh) . This only way to make it work is to disable the switch port and re-enable it again. This fixes the problem. Could anyone tell me where should I look to diagnose this problem (arp broadcast may be ???) ?? # ifconfig -a [root@bgruby103h1 root]# ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:60:14:54:0E inet addr:135.191.71.69 Bcast:135.191.71.127 Mask:255.255.255.128 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:5506 errors:7915 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:178854 TX packets:4592 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:466578 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:432561 (422.4 Kb) TX bytes:437866 (427.6 Kb) Interrupt:24 eth0:0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:60:14:54:0E inet addr:135.191.71.72 Bcast:135.191.71.127 Mask:255.255.255.128 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:24 eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:60:14:54:0F BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:25 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:5564 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5564 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:342597 (334.5 Kb) TX bytes:342597 (334.5 Kb) Thanx Balaji./ |
Have a look, if the problem is related to your switch or to your linux box. Did you try to use another switch? Whats the output of ifconfig and route -nv after reboot?

perhaps your linux box and the switch are unable to auto-negotiate the speed (10 / 100) and other settings (HDX /FDX).
